2016 – Low-THC Law Updated
- HB 2144 enacted allowing patients to legally possess low-THC cannabis oil with no more than 0.9% THC for epilepsy.
2017 – Hemp Production Authorized; Local Decriminalization Repealed
- HB 1164 allows hemp production with 0.3% THC or less with Department of Agriculture license; state legislature repeals Nashville and Memphis decriminalization ordinances through HB 0173.
2021 – Medical Cannabis Commission Created
- SB 118 establishes Tennessee Medical Cannabis Commission, improves CBD law for more conditions, and increases allowable THC limit to 0.9%.
2025 – Commission Extended; Hemp Regulations Tightened
- HB 0255 extends Medical Cannabis Commission to June 30, 2029; Governor signs HB 1376 banning THCA and synthetic cannabinoids effective January 1, 2026, and transferring hemp oversight to ABC.
